    b) my trackpad is clean. to be sure, how can i clean it?

Ironically, damp cloth. ;) :D Just have to give it a few minutes to dry. But I really don't think it's your problem. As I said, if it happens in Linux and OS X, it is almost certainly a hardware issue.... :(

Hey so I bought my friends old I phone 3gs. It is a 16gb iphone 3gs on 4.3.2 firmware. The sleep button is broken so I had to use pliers to put it into dfu. The problem is that every single jailbreak I have tried has failed. No matter what I do. I used redsn0w, but when I tried installing the custom firmware I gpt "error 21." So I looked on some forums and got a little further but then got "error 1601." Tried to fix it but nothing worked. I tried blackra1n, but it got stuck on "running." I tried limera1n but it also got stuck on running. Even redsn0w got stuck. I don't know what is wrong. Someone please help! I am running on a pc netbook by the way, because my mac mini is getting repaired.

The problem is the power button probably.
Maybe the pliers didnt do the job right and wasnt able to keep the button pressed for as long as needed to enter pwned DFU.
Also if you're on 4.3.2 there's no point on using incompatible JB tools like blackrain that worked only on 3.1.2 and limerain that was for 4.1

You wouldn't have any issues running that amount of traffic. (Though, I can't recommend WP-Cache enough for Wordpress blogs.)

I have a 13" black macbook that was bought in 2007. It has pretty standard hardware, such as 1GB of ram, 160GB HD, etc. However, it has been having problems for about a year now. The first problem it has relates to the computer lagging/skipping. The computer always lags (using a mouse or trackpad). It lags/skips when i'm browsing the internet, playing itunes (the songs actually skip and get choppy), playing a dvd using the DVD player app, and when I watch any type of video on the internet (youtube videos, flash videos; the audio gets choppy and fuzzy). The second issue I have been having is random shutdowns. Sometimes, I will be typing a report or browsing the internet and I will get an error message telling me that I have to restart the computer by holding down the power button. This has happened about 4 times. I think these issues might relate to a bad logic board, but I am not sure. Any ideas? How much does it cost to fix these issues? Thanks

My 15" Powerbook G4 (1.67GHz Superdrive) 80 GB hard drive is getting a little cramped so I'm looking for a bigger drive to replace it with.
Obviously the new drive needs to be just as quiet and fast (or better).
The current drive is reported as Seagate ST9808211A (http://www.seagate.com/staticfiles/support/disc/manuals/ata/100378844b.pdf) by System Profiler and is apparently rated with a max. transfer speed of 100 MB/sec, rotation speed of 5400 RPM and a noise level of 2.4-3.1 Bels (24-31 Db). It's worked without any issues since 2005.

There doesn't seem to be much to choose from when it comes to 2.5" drives these days, so I'm basically left to choose between the WD1600BEVE (160 GB, WD2500BEVE (250 GB) and WD3200BEVE (320 GB) "Scorpio Blue" models from Western Digital (http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=140). Are these any good or should I search a little harder and hopefully find something by Seagate again?
The reason I'm a little hesitant with Western Digital is that I have a couple of WD10EARS (1 TB) and WD20EARS (2TB) "Green power" drives which has this annoying feature that parks the drive head every 8 seconds or so, causing a lot of waiting and unnecessary tear and wear. They don't exactly advertise this fact (and it can't be disabled, at least not from Mac computers even though there's a DOS tool that used to work with the first batches of these drives when connected to a PC), so I'm worried that all current Western Digital drives might have these "features" (faults).
Are the 2.5" models from Western Digital a safe bet in comparison to my current drive?

May be a good idea to describe what these are -- photos, links?

    Review (http://www.digitalprosound.com/2002/10_oct/reviews/monitor_shootout.htm)

I can post pictures, but there really isn't much to see, they haven't been moved off my desk since I brought them home, there is no damage or what not. if anyone wants them I will post pictures, but I'm having some trouble with my camera, so I decided to get my thread up. I kinda assumed that most people that would be in the market for these probably wouldn't need to be reminded that they were speakers, but that was just a thought.

When bought so recently, the question always comes up, why not return it?
    1. They are used, there is nothing wrong with them, but I don't think I could take them back?

    2. I just don't have any use for them anymore, I've slimmed down my desk(s) and dont need these again

AbiWord (http://www.abisource.com/) 2.2 is now out. Unlike 2.0 there is also a native MacOS X version available :)

Download it @ Sourceforge.net (http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/abiword/) (you may have to scroll down a bit for the OS X version)

    Spotted this at OSNews.com (http://www.osnews.com/).

My immediate gut-instinct would be to create a singleton class at the Application level with class methods for using and accessing its features.

Since it's a singleton class I would try to implement lazy loading. It would only load the data upon first call or after having dumped the data due to a memory warning.

I'm sure the computer would be great, no matter which size you buy. I'm not trying to strong-arm you. Do whatever you like, mate.

But, honestly, the 27" screen is a complete knock-out. I can't do it without, now.

Ummmm, if your wife doesn't have her own computer, where are her music and apps located?

In any case, there's two basic ways to go about this.

    1. iTunes lets you create more than one iTunes library on a computer. Create a separate library for your wife, and let her do her own thing. In order to create a new library or switch between libraries, hold down the shift key while opening iTunes. (might be a different key if you have a Mac, but that's the general idea)

    2. Use a single iTunes account and a single iTunes library, and make separate playlists for your music and your wife's music. You can also pick and select which apps sync with which iDevice.

A variation of this option is that you can use both accounts with the same iTunes library, but once both accounts are in the same library, as far as I know, there's no quick way to tell which app/music was bought with which account.

Personally I prefer the second method, because switching libraries is a pain, and there might be occasional apps/music that you and your wife both use, but if you are using separate accounts/libraries, you'd have to buy them twice. But you'd have to be diligent about sorting your music into playlists.

Does anybody know when and wether at all google maps update 5.0 (and above) will come to iOS? I mean Apple pays to Google for the maps right?

Probably not. That's why you usually see android phones having a nicer Gmaps app than iPhone users.

Trying to open ports to allow hosting Killing Floor games, but no matter what I do, it doesn't want to open them.

The following ports are used by the game:
    7707 UDP/IP (Game Port)
    7708 UDP/IP (Query Port)
    7717 UDP/IP (GameSpy Query Port)
28852 TCP/IP and UDP (Allows your Server to Connect to the Master Server Browser)
8075 TCP/IP (Port set via ListenPort that your WebAdmin will run on)
    20560 UDP/IP (Steam Port)

    * Linksys E1000 router w/ latest firmware installed
    * Computer is assigned a static IP address (wired connection)
    * Port Forwarding and Port Range forwarding have been configured
    * Have tried DMZ to my Mac, no difference
    * Mac OS X Firewall is disabled
    * Router firewall is disabled
    * Firewall On with the app on the allow list isn't making a difference

This web-based tool and Network Utility keep showing the required ports as "closed" even though I have set up port forwarding to my Mac's IP and there are no firewalls in place.
    http://www.canyouseeme.org/

Here's the thing: if I enable something like Web Sharing (port 80) in Sharing, it opens and closes the port just fine, and those two utilities show the port's status properly.

But no matter what I do, firewall on or off, I can't get ports 7707-7717 and the others to become "open" on my Mac.

I was thinking of buying an iPod nano online from the Apple store.
The thing is that I never bought an Apple product online before.

I want to know exactly how a credit card charge on the Apple store breaks down; if there are hidden fees, etc.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I and I'm sure everyone else who has used Apple's Online Store received very detailed invoices for the order I placed, with no discrepancies WRT the amount put on my credit card.

I use MS Word at work and Pages at home and often times I switch documents between the two app's. So, I will try to just use Pages and see whether the lag problem goes away.

    Thanks for your keen observation.
