Honestly, this looks very fake. I watched the "proof" video before the actual filming. I still dont believe it.

But the song is awesome. Must be a really big fan. Wouldve took me years to make that.

And the guy behind him in the video looks terrifying!

I'm looking at picking up a Mac Mini as a HTPC and dropping cable, but then I realized my 42" plasma only supports 1024x768 resolution.

I'm guessing this won't exactly be optimal, so I'm weighing whether to get a better tv. I don't really want to have to spend the extra money on a new set, so I'm hoping I could get some opinions as to how dismal the experience will be with my current set up.

    Thanks!

Is your plasma an HDTV? Does it have HDMI inputs? If you're picking up the new Mini, the TV will support either 720p or 1080p via HDMI. If not, yeah, you're stuck at 1024x768.

This article (http://www.usenix.org/events/woot10/tech/full_papers/Aviv.pdf) in PDF format is a report from University of Pennsylvania researches who found that they could read passwords from photos of screens of Android phones when the "password pattern" method is used to unlock the phone.

Oily residues, or smudges, on the touch screen surface, are one side effect of touches from which frequently used patterns such as a graphical password might be inferred.
Their experiments showed that they could read passwords from residual smudges a good percentage of the time.

In one experiment, the pattern was partially identifiable in 92% and fully in 68% of the tested lighting and camera setups. Even in our worst performing experiment, under less than ideal pattern entry conditions, the pattern can be partially extracted in 37% of the setups and fully in 14% of them.
It may have been a convenient feature, but users of phones that allow pattern-based passwords would be wise to use an alphanumeric password instead.

On an iPhone I imagine that the same problem could occur if somebody photographed your screen right after you entered a password on the virtual keyboard.

Unless we all wear gloves or have exceptionally non-greasy hands!

Any Mac can be used as a server for this. You don't need the server OS, Lion server or Snow Leopard Server for that matter.

To ask yourself if you need the server version, read the description of Lion and Snow Leopard server services. If you don't need any of them then you don't need the server version.

Consider a NAS to be a computer with more than the usual number of disk drive slots that can only be used as a file server (some times additional services, depending on the NAS). If it does the job, you'll save money, but it won't be as flexible.

My Mac mini with Snow Leopard Server story is here: http://almy.us/server.html

    I have a Mac Pro 2009.

Just after I installed my new Nvidia Quadro 4000 for Mac I noticed that the fans are running at a much higher speed, everything else is working fine though, has anybody else noticed something like this ?. Just to clarify I am talking about the Mac Pro fans, not the one in the Video Card.

I am not using any other video card with the Quadro 4000. I've installed the Quadro 4000 on the PCI Slots #1 and #2 (both x16), just to try different locations but it's always the same issue.

I don't think the issue is temperature related, sometimes for no reason with the Mac Pro idle the computer fans will start ramping up speed up to very high RPMs, and sometimes with load on the computer the fans will run at very low RPMs, so I do not see a correlation between temperature and fan speed.

If I run Cinebench and execute an OpenGL test the Fans RPM will go down to the normal values and will stay there, this is really weird, it seems like the card needs to be activated or engaged by some OpenGL application and the fans (Expansion Slot and Power Supply) will return to their normal values.

I've been monitoring temperatures with iStat Menus, monstly CPU temperature and always in normal ranges, around 38C to 40C.

    Any suggestion ?, thanks

Have you a link to your site so we can check it out?

Also who are you using to host it? The location of the host relative to where you are viewing the site from can sometimes make a big difference.

My IPod touch 3g is only 4 months old but I get about an hours use before the the 20% battery life come up. I brought it back to Apple and everything checks out. I love the unit but the battery life sucks. I have gone on line and checked out how to get better batery life, but If I did what it says to do, it would be useless.

I recently started putting my movies on an 120GB iPod because my 32GB iPhone couldn't handle them all.

I've noticed, however, that the movies are all just sorted alphabetically.

Is there a way to group them into folders (as we all do with our music), so that I can keep all of my school videos together, comedies together, tv shows together, etc.?

Currently I have a lot of school/science videos on my iPod and they run the gamut of titles (alphabetically)....from "Acids and Bases" to "Solubility"...so, obviously, there are other (non-science) video titles that iTunes just puts in between those (making my seamless study of all things science a little more kludgy).

    Any advice would be great.

    Thanks,

    J.

I had a full blown case of Buckminster Fullerene once. You haven't lived until you've had a couple bucky balls coming at your face. With the Cummingtonite and everything..

Great link, BTW (both of them).

I can see your dilemma. Beats have been overhyped but from what you've described on what you're looking for those ones seem to be perfect. Beats have varied opinions but you should just take it like that, as an opinion.

You say you don't want to break the bank and that you're not an audiophile and whatnot. Finding earbuds like the ones you posted by Monster with the built in mic are really hard to find. I say go for those ones. They are a little pricey but in reality other earbuds in the same range are far more expensive. You're looking at around $150 and they do provide a better sound experience than the apple earbuds.

That style of over-ear 'sport' earbuds are hard to come by especially coupled with the iphone control/mic. If you did go with just in ear earbuds I would suggest a brand like Shure. But they cost waaaay more! But please please please don't go with Skullcandy. If you think Beats are overhyped for the price try cosmetic looks first before sound with skullcandys....ugh...

    anyway gl!

I dont really care about graphics, because i can run Bf1942 on high settings(yes, the requirements for it suck that bad that gma950 can run it) and im not a gamer.

The hard drive is unplugged (booting from the floppy) and all its been doing for the last 6 years is display the time.

Can my clock's fan be unplugged safely? Its not loud, but the white noise ruins the silence when I'm trying to read a book.

Well it can be as slow as 400MHz and as fast as 700MHz. If you could find out how much RAM its already got installed and how fast it is, we could probably make some better suggestions for you. For example, a 700MHz model with 768-1GB of RAM and AirPort card could serve as a nice kitchen/livingroom web browser Mac. If its only 400MHz with 64MB of RAM in it, then it would probably better serve as an OS 9 word processor.

Thanks for the reply - I swapped it out about a week ago.

Mac Pro, Mac Mini, both NAS drives and airport extreme have been rebooted several times.

I've renewed the DHCP lease on the mini already but to no avail.

    Thanks

How does a 500mhz G4 compare to a 1ghz G3 performance wise? When I was looking here (http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/G3CARDS/G3_1.1GHz_vs_G4_1GHz_review/index.html) I noticed they cost about the same.

    Hi all,

I could do with some help with finding the original of some wallpaper I got from here ages ago. I've spent the past couple of hours searching through old "Desktop Picture" threads, but to no avail :(

I have the wallpaper set on my iMac, but now want to add it to my new MBA also, but find that I've deleted the file from the iMac, so it's only displaying the wallpaper from somewhere in the cache I suspect.

IIRC I got the link to the wallpaper from a "desktop Picture" thread dated from but as I say I've searched & searched, (& will continue doing so) but can't find it. So now I'm hoping that if I post a screen-shot of the wallpaper taken from my iMac, that someone will recognise it & perhaps be able to post a link to the original.

Long shot I know, but I'd really appreciate any help that could be offered

    hi
Does anyone in the forum have experience with the 2 monitors I listed.
Both are under 350.00, much less than apple cinema display.

    Samsung LED from newegg
    viewsonic LCD from amazon

Will be using with 13" i7 macbook pro.
Will be using mostly photoshop, nothing crazy.
please if you have one of these monitors let me know.

    thanks in advance !!!!!

LED is where the future is, I would highly recommend the samsung. I own a samsung led tv and I will say the picture and color contrast is absolutely stunning.

Both are 1080P (1920x1080), so the 27" ACD has ~70% greater resolution (2560x1440).

I don't think he was asking about the ACD and also try doubling the price on it. He could buy two samsung led and still have extra cash left over. Moving up from 1280x800 to 1920x1080 is already a leap.
